Most growing businesses don’t decide to outgrow ad hoc marketing — they just notice, one day, that it has stopped working. Here are seven signs it’s already happened.
1. You have plenty of activity, but no clear strategy
Social posts go out. The website gets the occasional update. Someone runs an ad campaign now and then. None of it is wrong, exactly — but none of it is working toward a shared plan, because there isn’t one.
2. Sales and marketing operate separately
Sales wants more leads. Marketing is producing content. The two teams rarely compare notes on what’s actually converting, so effort gets spent on what’s easy to measure rather than what moves revenue.
3. Agencies and freelancers work on isolated pieces
A designer here, a social contractor there, an SEO freelancer somewhere else — each one good at their piece, none of them accountable for how the pieces fit together.
4. Your website no longer explains why customers should choose you
It was built for the business you were two or three years ago. The positioning, the proof points and the offer have all moved on since — the site hasn’t.
5. Content gets published but doesn’t create pipeline
There’s a backlog of articles and posts, and a reasonable amount of traffic — but little of it can be traced to an actual opportunity in the sales pipeline.
6. Marketing performance is hard to measure
Ask “what’s our best-performing channel?” and the honest answer is a shrug. Without a shared view of what’s working, every budget decision is a guess.
7. Everyone is experimenting with AI, with no plan for using it well
Individual people are trying ChatGPT or other tools on their own initiative. Useful, but ad hoc — there’s no view of which tasks are worth automating, or how to do it safely and consistently across the team.
What this actually means
None of these signs mean your business needs a bigger marketing department. Most growing businesses don’t need more activity — they need someone senior enough to turn the existing activity into a plan, and accountable enough to make sure it’s working.
